JM: Tell us a bit about your business.

MS: I own Made by Mary. I design amigurumi patterns. I love crafting. All kinds of crafting!

JM: Why did you start your business?

MS: I started Made by Mary initially to pay for my crafts. At first I was selling finished items. Hats and baby photo props were the beginning. Then I realized I didn’t really enjoy making hats, dolls were my favorite! So I started making dolls. I made and sold hundreds of dolls from my Etsy shop. Then one day someone asked for a doll that I couldn’t find a pattern for. At that point I decided to try my hand at designing and I was hooked!

JM: What is your favorite thing about being a yarnpreneur™?

MS: My favorite thing about being a yarnpreneur is creating with yarn! I love it so much!

JM: What is your least favorite thing about being a yarnpreneur™?

MS: My least favorite thing is the “business” side of the company. I just want to crochet.

JM: What would you tell (or what advice would you give) someone that wants to be a yarnpreneur™?

MS: The advice I would give people is: Just try it! Go for it! What have you got to lose? If you want to create, just do it!

JM: What do you wish you had done differently when you first started your business?

MS: When I first started my business, I was all alone. I didn’t have any designer friends and I didn’t reach out to anyone. I just did everything alone. I made LOTS of mistakes that any seasoned designer would avoid. I would try to reach out to designers and get some help. That is one reason I try to help new designers when I see them. I reach out to them.

JM: What’s next for you and your business?

MS: The next thing for my business is more patterns and more creative fun!
